Mixed-media video installation, sculptural apparatus with electronics, ice crystals around cast aluminium figure, object height 169 cm. Circular projection Ø 236 cm, video 14:32 1920x1200p
2026

Traces of the Ephemeral Code explores the transience and unstoppable nature of time. While the Anthropocene leaves visible marks upon the Earth, barely anything of our digital data, algorithms and technological achievements will survive in archaeological timescales. Whereas fossil deposits and structures endure, our digital existence, the knowledge of our age, risks vanishing into a digital Dark Age, invisibly, fleetingly and without material trace. Just as the Yuki-onna in Japanese legend, the digital world appears ephemeral and immaterial, a spectre that dominates yet leaves no mark. Digital memory is as transient as snow melting in the sun.

The installation takes the form of a sculptural apparatus of black system profile with interwoven tubes, cables and computer cooling technology, upon which a 20 cm cast aluminium figure of the Yuki-onna is mounted, steadily enveloped by growing ice crystals. A circular projection in the background (Ø 236 cm) presents fossilised circuit traces, macro shots of microchips, fragments of snow, glimpses of family videos, glitch sequences and abstract data signatures. A lens distortion creates a distanced, temporally displaced perspective, heightened by a soundscape ranging from crackling textures to sweeping atmospheric landscapes.
